Our Lady of Peace Korean Catholic Church

3D Project

Ongoing project to digitize Our Lady of Peace Korean Catholic Church.

The church is preparing to build a new sanctuary, but for now, it continues to gather in a temporary warehouse space. The current building, though aged and inadequate as a proper house of God, has faithfully served the Korean-American Catholic community of the greater Orange Diocese for 28 years. It has been a sacred place for the Sacraments, formation, and apostolic work. I started this project to preserve its history and the memories of Irvine’s Korean Catholic culture and people.

The reality comes from the detail. The key to realize more realistic scene is not only modeling, but also texturing to show every detail of church supplies. Every time I attended the mass, I observed and recorded the detail of the church. Still I am trying to gather more detail. Still there are a lots of things to digitalize. Please be patience and wait for final result.

The missal stand features a complex Gothic leaf pattern, which made modeling it quite challenging. I couldn't find images that showed every angle, so I used two reference images and employed Photoshop to create the diffuse, roughness, normal, and displacement maps. The final result turned out fantastic.

To create the Crucifixion of Jesus, I used Character Creator software to design a figure with the correct posture. I imported this figure into Blender, where I added hair, clothing, and a crown of thorns, and then sculpted the figure with more detail. This project was my first work, and although there were several setbacks, the final result closely resembles the original depiction of the Crucifixion in the church.
